নামকরণের ইতিহাসঃ
জনশ্রুতি আছে এখানকার কোনো এক স্থান ব্যাঙ সাপকে গ্রাস করেছিল এবং তা দেখে কয়েকজন বালিকা নৃত্য করেছিল। এ নৃত্যকে উপলক্ষ করে ওই স্থানের নাম হয় নাট্যপুর। পর্যায়ক্রমে নাট্যপুর, নাটাপুর, নাট্টর ও নাটোর হয়েছে। অন্য তথ্য থেকে জানা যায়, বর্তমান জেলা সদরের অবস্থান এত নিচু ছিল যে, এখানে পায়ে চলাচল প্রায় অসম্ভব। তাই স্থানটিকে বলা হতো ‘নাতর’ (না-অসম্ভব এবং তর-গমন); যা থেকে কালক্রমে নাটোর নামের উৎস হয়েছে। অন্য অভিমত হচ্ছে জেলা সদরের পাশ দিয়ে প্রবহমান নারদ নদীর নাম থেকে কালক্রমে নাটোর জেলার নামকরণ হয়েছে।
আয়তন ও অবস্থানঃ
আয়তনের ভিত্তিতে নাটোর জেলা বাংলাদেশের ৩৬তম বৃহত্তম জেলা। এই জেলার মোট আয়তন ১৮৯৬.০৫ বর্গ কিমি, যা সমগ্র বাংলাদেশের মোট আয়তনের ১.২৮%। ২৪০২৫ উত্তর অক্ষাংশ থেকে ২৪০৫র্৮ উত্তর অক্ষাংশ এবং ৮৮০০র্১ পূর্ব দ্রাঘিমাংশ থেকে ৮৮০৩০ পূর্ব দ্রাঘিমাংশের মধ্যে অবস্থিত। নাটোর জেলার উত্তরে নওগাঁ ও বগুড়া জেলা। দক্ষিণে পাবনা ও বগুড়া জেলা, পূর্বে পাবনা ও সিরাজগঞ্জ জেলা এবং পশ্চিমে রাজশাহী জেলা।
নাটোর কেন বিক্ষাত:
বাংলাদেশের ছোট্ট একটি শহর নাটোর। নাটোর আয়োতনের দিক দিয়ে ছোটো হলেও এর ইতিহাস ও ঔতিয্য অনেক বড়। নাটোর অনেক দিক দিয়ে বাংলাদেশের মধ্যে বিক্ষাত একটি শহর। যে যে কারণে নাটোর বিক্ষাত-
১.নাটোরের কাঁচাগোল্লার নাম আমরা সবাই জানি। কাঁচাগোল্লা নাটোরের তৈরি একটি মিষ্টিজাত দ্রব্য। এটির স্বাদ দেখ বিদেশের মানুষকে নাটোরের কথা মনে করিয়ে দেয়। এটি বংলাদেশের একটি ঐতিয্য।পৃথিবীর প্রায় সব দেশেয় কিছুটা জানে নাটোরের কাঁচাগোল্লার কথা।
২. নাটোরের আরেকটা ঐতিয্য হলো নটোরের চলনবিল। বংলাদেশের সব থেকে বড় বিলের নাম যদি বলতে বলি তাহলে অবশ্যই সবাই চলন বিলের কথায় বলবে। চলনবিলের আয়তন ৫০০ বর্গমাইল বা প্রায় ১৪২৪ বর্গকিলোমিটার। আবার কোন জরিপ মতে চলনবিলের আয়তন ৮০০ বর্গমাইল বা প্রায় ২০৭২ কিলোমিটার। ... বর্তমানে চলনবিল অনেকখানি হ্রাস পেয়ে আয়তন দাঁড়িয়েছে ১১৫০ বর্গ কিলেমিটারে।
৩. নাটোরের আর একটি বড় ঐতিয্য হলো উত্তরা গণভবণ। যাকে আমরা নাটোরের রাজবাড়ি নামে চিনি। নাটোরের রাজবাড়ির সব থেকে বড় ঐতিয্য হলো নাটোরের রাজবাড়ির প্রবেশ বথের বড় ঘড়িটি। এটি নাটেৃার রাজবাড়িকে অন্যান্য রাজবাড়ি থেকে আলাদা করেছে। নাটোরের রাজবাড়ি তার সুন্দর্য দিয়ে আজে মানুষের মনে জায়গা করে রেখেছে। এটি এখন নাটোরের বড় পিকনিক স্পর্ট।
